Our Love Story

May 31st 2018 – Mount Whistlers – Jasper National Park

Kyle and Emily met seven years ago during their first year at Trent University. They ended up living in the same residence and although they were a few houses apart they ended up meeting thanks to a set of twins, Michael and Christopher Segovia. Michael lived on Kyle’s floor and Christopher lived on Emily’s, so every once in a while Kyle would accompany Michael to visit Christopher. It wasn’t until February of that school year that they finally talked to one another, and after hanging out one time, talking for five hours straight, they were both amazed at how well they connected. A few months and about fifty hangouts later Kyle took Emily out for their first date. Kyle took such care planning the evening, picking out a nice restaurant, having Emily review the menu, making a reservation, and dressing up for the occasion. It was the most amazing date Emily had ever been on. Within a few weeks of that date, Kyle completely surprised Emily, by saying, ‘I love you,’ to which Emily replied, ‘I love you too.’ Before they knew it, the summer break was approaching, and they had plans that would keep them two and a half hours apart. However, that didn’t faze them, and they made the trek to see each other every other weekend. Over the next three years, Kyle and Emily continued spending as much time together as possible during the school year, and travelling to see each other a few times a month during the summer. Over the course of those years, they spent countless hours on Kyle’s family farm. They went camping, hiking, spent weekends in Toronto, hung out with both school and friends from home, and spent the holidays getting to know each other’s families. Kyle and Emily both graduated from Trent in June of 2016. As a celebration for graduating, they decided to take a trip to Europe, and spent five weeks visiting Kyle’s family in Wales, wandering around London, England, Edinburgh and Glasgow, Scotland, and Belfast and Dublin, Ireland. The end of the trip was really difficult for Emily as they were uncertain how often they were going to get to see each other for the next few years. Kyle was applying to jobs all across the country, and Emily was working in Guelph, getting ready to attend Queen’s University for her Bachelor of Education in the fall. They kept up their visits every two or three weeks for eight months, until Kyle got a job and moved to Winnipeg in February of 2017. Emily, having already applied to Trent University for her Master’s decided to see if she could do it in Winnipeg, eventually applying to the Master’s program in Native Studies at the University of Manitoba. In May of 2017, after not seeing Kyle for three months, Emily flew out to see if she could make Winnipeg home. Upon her acceptance to the University of Manitoba in July, Emily immediately accepted and began preparations to move to Winnipeg. Kyle and Emily’s dream of getting to be together permanently after years of going weeks at a time without seeing each other, was finally here! After only a few months of living together, they both knew that their futures were with one another. In May of 2018, Kyle and Emily, with Mike (Kyle’s best man), set out on a road trip across Canada. On the second day together, May 31st 2018, on the summit of Mount Whistlers, Kyle got down on one knee and asked Emily to marry him, to which she said, YES! Kyle and Emily are so excited to get married in February of 2020, two days shy of their seventh anniversary.
